NO SUDDEN MOVE
Animation for HBO MAX’s promo of the upcoming show No Sudden Move, from director Steven Soderbergh. Kill 2 Birds approached me to animate a lively sequence, full of energy, with sudden movements and jazzy type.
Set in 1950’s Detroit, the film features a star-studded cast of iconic hustlers. Both factors helped shape the jazz inspired album cover design and animation. Footage wasn’t yet available for this tease, so instead the team used client supplied stills and 3D projection mapping, which we used to create a sense of dynamic living space coupled with sudden bursts of energy and movement throughout. One of the challenges was to showcase each character with their unique design in a legible way despite the short run time.
For a more robust breakdown, please view the entirety of the project on Kill 2 Bird’s site.

There are elements of “No Sudden Move” that taken together almost feel like a Soderbergh Greatest Hits.

Movies routinely place characters in desperate, life-or-death situations, but rarely do we see them behave in a genuinely desperate way. No Sudden Move corrects this oversight in a way that's at once hilarious and distressing."
Mike D'Angelo, The A.V. Club

it’s like a shabbier, more substantial Ocean’s Eleven.
